Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival 2010

Artiste Workshops

MFAB would like to thank all the workshop hosts for giving their time to MFAB and to FOLKUS for their generous contribution to MFAB Festival 2010. Here's an outline of the Artiste Workshops that will be presented during the festival, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with some introductory notes about some of the performer/presenters (listed alphabetically):
  • Derek Gifford is one of the stalwarts of the North West folk scene where his relaxed approach and contagious enthusiasm have earned him great respect. Derek is a patient and experienced Guitar tutor much in demand at festivals.
  • Fluff is a well known local fiddle teacher and session musician. She has a Certificate in Teaching from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (CT ABRSM) and has played with The Incredible String Band, Nick Harper and Waking the Witch, amongst others.
  • Fred Rose, formerly a special-needs music teacher at Colne College, a multi-instrumentalist equally at home with Guitar, Whistle or Bodhran. Fred is an excellent tutor and also a maker of fine whistles.
  • Pete Latham has been an acoustic guitar player for the last 33 years, playing many blues and folk festivals along the way. He has 15 years of teaching experience behind him. He's also comfortable with other styles and genres as well as being a player of mandolin and lap slide guitar.
  • Steve Turner comes from a family of singers & concertina players; his grandfather sang & played concertina in the 1890s. In the 1970s he belonged to the Geordie band Canny Fettle & won the Melody Maker 'Stars of the 80s' national competition. His English concertina playing is beautifully inventive & dazzling. He is also an excellent singer, cittern & mandolin player & his latest (5th.) album has received outstanding reviews.
The workshop will cover choice of accompaniment styles & instrument, different approaches to accompaniment, finding chords, singing techniques, arrangement & presentation.
  • "Tom Doughty is possessed of a deep musical soul, that magic link between feeling and movement which makes the slide guitar such an individual instrument.  His touch is wide ranging, and his music is full of big feeling.  In a world of derivative and imitative slide guitarists, Tom 's sound is unique and special.”  Bob Brozman
This is an opportunity to offer an insight into Tom 's interpretation on slide guitar music ranging from Delta Blues sounds to gentle Indian melodies. The workshop will focus on slide guitar techniques, including the use and development of open tunings and will include demonstrations of Tom's methods of playing including his unique approach his craft. The workshop is aimed at players and non players alike who have an interest in acoustic slide guitar music and blues roots influences. There will be a limited opportunity for hands on instruction but this session is mainly aimed at providing a springboard of ideas through demonstration and discussion. Expect to hear some lively conversation, interspersed with great music, innovative ideas and interpretations.
