- Marquee Stage: Emma and The Professor
This
Shropshire based duo have been building up a fantastic reputation
and are now being recognised as one of the rising talents on the
folk scene. Emma has sung in many genres, but folk music became
her real passion when first meeting up with Benji Kirkpatrick in
1996. With his band, she contributed a track to the first Evolving
Tradition cd. Emma studied Music Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne
before returning to Shropshire to team up with The Professor (Mark).
Mark's
poetry made great lyrics for Emma's debut album, Something Blue,
which was picked up by Osmosys and Rykomusic in 2002. From then
on Mark took up the bodhran and began pushing it across all musical
boundaries with his individual style of play. At times this can
be hypnotic, tribal and tabla-like and he always plays with a truly
recognisable kind of freedom and expression.
"The
musical stew they cook up is uniquely theirs, merging folk, rock
and blues influences with intermittent eastern flavours from Emma's
Grandmothers side. The boundaries get pushed and the rules broken
and all in the name of finding new life in old songs." - Living
Tradition - issue 65 Nov 2005
Throughout
their performances there is an underlying tide of emotion that washes
over you, leaving you completely absorbed. They have a real ability
to pull you in and being ' people players ' they love interaction
with their audiences and always love to
"let rip and fly in sessions with a joyous tumult of noise."
- Living Tradition - issue 65 Nov 2005
Some
of their performances to date have been: Support for Show of Hands
and John Renborn and Jacqui McShee and festivals such as Both Sides
of The Tweed, Glasson Festival, Moor and Coast and Nantwich.
You
can see them in 2006 at Chipping Norton, St Valentine's Festival,
The Black Horse Festival, MAAD May Fest, Folk on The Pier, Wheaton
Aston, Middlewich, Glasson Festival, Stonehaven Festival, Bideford,
Burntwood and Cornwall along with other bookings at Folk Clubs and
venues.
